TotalEnergies and Li-Ning Launch First Official 3V3 Badminton Tournament in Malaysia

The tournament will see matches in Kuala Lumpur, Johor, Penang and Kuching, with hopes to discover new badminton talent

Putrajaya, 16 June 2023 – TotalEnergies in Malaysia and Li-Ning Malaysia announced the launch of the first official 3V3 TotalEnergies x Li-Ning Cup for non-professionals in Malaysia. This is the first 3V3 badminton tournament that both companies are co-organizing in Southeast Asia.

The launch ceremony was officiated by Dato Sri Sam Soh, Director of Sunlight Sports Sdn Bhd, together with Jennifer Li, Managing Director of TotalEnergies Marketing Malaysia, Simon Soh, Business Development Head of Li-Ning Malaysia, Wilfred Wong, Assistant General Manager of IOI City Mall and former badminton legend Tan Boon Heong. Goh Liu Ying and Janice Woon also graced the event as key supporters of the 3v3 TotalEnergies x Li-Ning Cup.

The 3V3 TotalEnergies x Li-Ning Cup 2023 will kickstart its first match in Kuala Lumpur on 15 September 2023, followed by Johor, Penang and Kuching, Sarawak. Winners from each state will then compete in a grand finale on 18-19 November 2023 in Kuala Lumpur. 

The 3v3 badminton tournament will have four categories

  • Men’s Team with two age groups – under 30 and above 30 years old
  • Mixed Open Team with at least one female player
  • Mixed Fun Team with at least one player under 15 years of age

There will be a RM300 registration fee per team with goodies worth RM900 in value given to the team. Additionally, there is a total of RM338,800 worth of prizes to be won by the winners of the 3v3 badminton tournament. The eligibility for the tournament is only extended to Malaysian citizens. National or professional players who have participated in international tournaments sanctioned by Badminton Asia and BWF within the past 5 years (2018-2023) are also not eligible to participate in the tournament.

In China, the TotalEnergies Li-Ning Li Yongbo Cup 3V3 Badminton Tournament is a series played in more than 20 cities across the country each year since 2017. The 3V3 format in badminton has three players playing against three players in a match.

TotalEnergies is also the title sponsor as well as the Official Energies Partner and Official Lubricants Partner of Badminton World Federation (BWF) Major Championships including the BWF World Championships, BWF Thomas and Uber Cup Finals, and BWF Sudirman Cup Finals. Most recently in Korea, a Memorandum of Understanding has been signed by TotalEnergies’ joint venture company S-OIL TotalEnergies Lubricants Co., Ltd to be an official partner of the Badminton Korea Association and a sponsorship partner of international badminton games held in Korea. These will be organized by BWF and hosted by Badminton Korea Association.
