TotalEnergies starts generation from the Parang wind farm, its first operated greenfield wind project in South Korea

Seoul, November 25, 2024 – TotalEnergies has commenced generation from Parang, a 17 megawatt (MW) onshore wind farm in South Korea that is the company’s first operated greenfield wind project in the country. The three turbines, located in the county of Yeong-Deok on the country’s east coast, will produce 50 gigawatt-hours (GWh) per year, enough to supply electricity to about 35,000 people.

The Parang wind project has created more than 100 jobs in the region, making a positive effect on the local economy. The project is a further step in TotalEnergies’ development in APAC where renewable energy is expected to comprise 30 to 50 percent of the power generation mix by 2030.

The wind farm is located on land belonging to the local “Yeongnam Nam–ssi Goejeonggong–pa” clan that has lived in this area since 1600s and has inherited a traditional Confucian way of life. Hoji-Maeul, the clan village and a designated National Folklore Cultural Heritage site is located 2km from the wind farm site. Throughout the development and construction of the project, TotalEnergies has demonstrated its strong social commitment by engaging with the local community and providing them with the possibility to invest in the project.

The electricity generated by Parang will supply the South Korean electricity market, while Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) will be delivered to KOMIPO (Korea Midland Power), the state-owned power generation company (Genco) through a 20-year agreement.

“Our main challenges for the Parang project were its isolation and the need to carry out the work while respecting the sacred sanctuaries,” says Francesc Grau, Director construction Regulated countries. We learned a lot, setting up a local project team in Seoul, finding the right suppliers and applying our safety standards. Now Parang is making a new contribution to the decarbonization of South Korea’s energy mix.”

TotalEnergies and renewables electricity

As part of its ambition to get to net zero by 2050, TotalEnergies is building a world class cost-competitive portfolio combining renewables (solar, onshore and offshore wind) and flexible assets (CCGT, storage) to deliver clean firm power to its customers. By mid-2024, TotalEnergies’ gross renewable electricity generation installed capacity reached 24 GW. TotalEnergies will continue to expand this business to reach 35 GW in 2025 and more than 100 TWh of net electricity production by 2030.
