Australia - Ichthys LNG
A major integrated LNG project
Location: Australia
Partners: INPEX (67.82%), TotalEnergies (26%), Japanese gas buyers (3.555%), CPC (2.625%)
Main activity: LNG production
Commissioning: 2018
Combined capacity
TotalEnergies entered the Ichthys LNG project in 2006 and currently holds a 26% stake, alongside Inpex (67.82%, operator), Japanese gas buyers (3.555%), and CPC (2.625%). Located 220 km off the northwest coast of Australia in the Browse Basin at 250 m water depth, Ichthys is one of the first major developments in the region.
The project reached Final Investment Decision (FID) in 2012, with offshore production starting in July 2018 and the first LNG cargo shipped in October 2018.
It features two LNG trains with a combined capacity of 8.9 million tonnes per annum (Mtpa), 1.65 Mtpa of LPG production, and a condensate production capacity of 85,000 barrels per day. The project has reached a production plateau of 360,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day (kboe/d), with LNG primarily sold to Asian buyers under long-term contracts.
The offshore facilities include 42 producing wells, two offshore processing facilities, and an 889 km, 42-inch pipeline. The project is undergoing phased expansion: Phase 2a involved construction and drilling of additional Brewster and Plover wells with a new gas gathering system; Phase 2b, focused on offshore compression, reached FID in Q4 2021 with Ready for Start-Up (RFSU) expected in Q2 2026; and Phase 2c is currently in the Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) stage. The "Cash Maple" development is planned to extend the production plateau beyond Phase 2c.
