Papua New Guinea - Papua LNG
Becoming a key operator and player in the country
Location: Papua New Guinea
Main activity: LNG production
TotalEnergies has been present in Papua New Guinea since 2012 and operates several key licenses, including PRL-15 (which covers the Elk and Antelope discoveries), PPL-576, and PPL-589, while also participating as a partner in PPL-339. The company is focused on developing the Elk and Antelope gas fields through the Papua LNG project, while also building an exploration portfolio in both the foothills and deep-water regions of the country. A significant milestone was reached with the signing of a gas agreement in 2019, followed by a fiscal stability agreement in 2021, which helped solidify the project's regulatory and economic framework.
The Papua LNG development is integrated with the PNG LNG project through a downstream agreement, allowing liquefaction to take place at the Caution Bay site. In 2024 and 2025, TotalEnergies re-engaged in technical studies and initiated a roadmap toward a Final Investment Decision (FID), marking a renewed phase of progress for the project.
Additionally, TotalEnergies and Petronas are planning to drill the Mailu-1 exploration well, Papua New Guinea's first deepwater well in 2025. The Mailu prospect is located in Block PL 576 within the Papuan Basin.
