Sustainable aviation fuel (SAF)
A solution to decarbonize the airline industry
The development of SAF is part of TotalEnergies’ multi-energy strategy to meet the challenge of decarbonizing the air transport industry, in line with the Company’s ambition to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, together with society.
What is SAF?
SAF is a drop-in solution that is immediately available to reduce CO2 emissions from air transport, requiring no changes to existing storage and distribution infrastructure, aircraft or engines.

Years of experience in SAF
For over ten years, TotalEnergies has been involved in a range of initiatives designed to promote the production and development of sustainable aviation fuels, in partnership with major market players.
What is SAF produced by TotalEnergies?
SAF is a product based on three elements:

Sustainability
Ensures that the product is developed in compliance with economic, social and environmental criteria on an ongoing basis.

Our production
From alternative raw materials such as waste and residues from the circular economy (used cooking oils, etc.).

Safety in use
SAF meets the same technical standards as its fossil equivalent (ASTM D7566). After blending with JET A-1 in compliance with current standards, the alternative fuel is considered a conventional JET A-1 fuel meeting ASTM D1655 specifications.
Production of TotalEnergies’ SAF
At TotalEnergies, SAF is produced through two main ways:
HEFA
SAF is made by hydrotreating esters and fatty acids, listed in the Renewable Energy Directive. The SAF obtained can reduce CO2 emissions by up to 90% over the entire lifecycle compared to a fossil equivalent. TotalEnergies’ SAF is blended with JET A-1 up to 35%.
Co-processing
Introducing into the units of a traditional refinery eligible waste oils at the same time as the usual fossil feedstock.
TotalEnergies intends to become a major player in the production of SAF, thanks to SAF production in its platforms or through partnerships. In Asia, TotalEnergies conducted several studies to further develop its SAF production.

China: TotalEnergies and SINOPEC join forces to produce sustainable jet fuel at a SINOPEC's refinery
TotalEnergies and SINOPEC signed a Heads of Agreement (HoA) in 2024 to jointly develop a SAF production unit at a SINOPEC's refinery in China. The planned unit, jointly owned by SINOPEC and TotalEnergies, will have the capacity to produce 230 kt/y of SAF, and will process local waste or residues from the circular economy.

TotalEnergies has joined the recently created Asia SAF Association, the ASAFA. This association, headquartered in Singapore, aims at accelerating the adoption of SAF in Asia
